Open Ph.D. Position in Fault-Tolerant Sensing 

This is a joint Ph.D. position of the Institute for Technical Informatics, Graz University of Technology and Complexity Science Hub Vienna in a multidisciplinary research project focusing on fault-tolerant sensing and its application to smart products and production. The position is with a cyber-physical systems team based in Vienna, Austria.

The Institute for Technical Informatics at Graz University of Technology (http://iti.tugraz.at) works on highly interdisciplinary research projects and cutting edge technologies in modern networked embedded systems. The Complexity Science Hub Vienna (http://www.csh.ac.at) is a joint initiative of AIT, IIASA, Medical University of Vienna, TU Graz, TU Wien, and Vienna University of Economics and Business. The objective of the hub is to foster research activities on complex systems dedicated to collection, analysis, and making sense of Big Data in ways that are directly valuable for science and society. Focus areas include smart cities, Internet of Things, networks, innovation dynamics, medical, social, ecological, and economic systems.

We offer a fully funded PhD position (40 hours / week) in the research field fault-tolerant sensing focused on building safe, autonomous and intelligent sensing systems on top of low-cost, small-sized, noisy and unreliable networked sensors. The position is based in Vienna and the successful candidate will work in collaboration with physicists, statisticians and machine learning experts at CSH Vienna. The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Ph.D. program at TU Graz and have regular business trips to Graz.

Applicants must hold a Master degree (or equivalent) in computer engineering, computer science, or electrical engineering before they can take on the position. Good knowledge and experience in programming languages for data analysis (e.g., Python), good understanding of statistics, machine learning and Big Data analysis methods, experience in building sensor systems, programming robots or drones will be considered as a plus. Proficiency in English (spoken and written) is required. Applicants should be highly motivated, have initiative and responsibility, be able to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team, should have interest in scientific research, and commitment to publish research results and to obtain a doctoral degree. 

The position is to be filled from February 1, 2018 with an initial appointment for three years. The position is remunerated according to the collective contract (Kollektivvertrag) for Austrian Universities, i.e., the salary amounts to at least 38'234 EUR/year before taxes and may increase depending on prior experience.
