Special Issue on Industrial Technologies and Applications for the Internet of Things

Recently, the widespread deployment of wireless sensor networks, embedded computing and inexpensive sensors has fostered the rise of an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). IIoT is the direct motivation and drive for the industrial upgrading (e.g., the implementation of Industry 4.0). With the support of emerging technologies, IIoT is capable of continuously capturing information from various sensors and objects, securely sending sensor readings to cloud-based data centers, and seamlessly adjusting manufacturing parameters via a closed loop system. IIoT can effectively detect failures and trigger maintenance processes, autonomously reacting to unexpected changes in   production. However, it is very challenging to capture, semantically analyze and employ data in a coherent manner from heterogeneous, sensor-enabled devices (e.g., industrial equipment, assembly lines, and transport trucks) owing to the lack of measurement tools, collection protocols, standardized APIs and security guidelines.

This special issue aims to bring together the state-of-the-art technical solutions, tutorials, survey papers and prototype implementations for a future IIoT. In particular, it focuses on system modelling, design, architecture, implementation, assessment, adaptation and management of IIoT applications and services, together with communication protocols and sharing mechanisms. The possible topics include but are not limited to:

  • IIoT data sensing and aggregation protocols

  • IIoT data inconsistency detection and resolution

  • IIoT security techniques for data, subscribers and applications

  • Concurrent event detection and processing in IIoT

  • Collective intelligence for IIoT systems

  • IIoT system design, implementation and deployment

  • IIoT Apps for Android or Apple IOS

  • Cloud-based IIoT processing management

  • Manufacturing Cyber-Physical Systems (MCPS)

  • 5C architecture (connection, conversion, cyber, cognition, and configuration)

Submission

Authors should follow the Computer Networks journal manuscript format at the journal webpage:http://www.elsevier.com/journals/computer-networks/1389-1286/guide-for-authors. The submission must be clearly written and in excellent English, with a maximum page limit of 20 pages. If an earlier version of the paper was published at a conference, the submitted manuscript must be a substantial extension of the conference paper. In this case, authors are also required to submit their published conference article and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. Manuscripts should be submitted online through http://ees.elsevier.com/comnet/ with the paper type as: SI: IIoT.

Important Dates

Submission deadline: 31st July, 2015
First round notification: 31st October, 2015
Final notification: 30th November, 2015
